Ready for What Comes Next

There is something about this time of year that always feels like a transition.

Summer is beginning to wind down. School supplies are being packed into backpacks. Families are settling back into routines. The long summer evenings are getting a little shorter, and before we know it, fall will be here.

At the dojang, we are going through a transition of our own.

This week is Pre-Test Week, and this Saturday is our Summer Gup Testing.

For many of our students, the next few days will be filled with repetition. Stances will be checked. Hyung will be sharpened. Korean terminology will be reviewed. Techniques will be practiced again and again until they begin to feel natural.

But Pre-Test Week is about more than making sure you know the material.

It is about asking yourself a simple question:

Am I ready for what comes next?

Pre-Testing Is About Preparation

Testing should never feel like a surprise.

By the time a student steps onto the floor for their belt test, the majority of the work has already been done.

It was done during all of those regular classes when nobody was handing out a new belt.

It was done when you practiced your stance one more time.

When you struggled through a technique until it finally clicked.

When you showed up tired.

When you made a mistake, corrected it, and tried again.

Pre-testing gives us an opportunity to look at everything we have been working on and see where we stand. Sometimes we discover that we are ready. Sometimes we discover one or two things that need a little more attention.

Both are valuable.

A pre-test isn’t there to create anxiety. It is there to provide direction.

Find the weakness. Work on it. Build confidence through preparation.

That lesson reaches far beyond Tang Soo Do.

Back to School

Many of our students are also walking into classrooms this week or very soon.

Some are returning to familiar schools and familiar teachers. Others may be walking into a new building, starting middle school or high school, meeting new classmates, or experiencing their very first day of school.

There are a lot of unknowns.

Martial arts cannot make every challenge disappear, but it can help us develop the tools to face those challenges.

Stand tall.

Look people in the eye.

Be respectful.

Have confidence in yourself.

Help someone who needs it.

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

And when something is difficult, keep working.

Those are dojang lessons, but they are also pretty good lessons to carry into a classroom.

Summer Testing

Saturday gives many of our students an opportunity to demonstrate how much they have grown over the summer.

And I deliberately use the word demonstrate.

A belt test doesn’t magically create progress.

The progress happened beforehand.

Testing simply gives you an opportunity to show it.

There may be nerves. There may be mistakes. Someone will probably forget something they have performed perfectly a hundred times before. That is part of testing, too.

What matters is what happens next.

Do you freeze?

Or do you regain your composure, fix your mistake, and continue?

That ability to recover is one of the most valuable things we can teach.

Then Comes Fall

Once testing is finished, we turn the page again.

New belts will bring new material.

New students will walk through our doors.

Our class routines will begin shifting out of summer mode and into fall.

And everybody gets another opportunity to set a goal.

Maybe that goal is earning the next belt.

Maybe it is finally remembering your entire hyung without help.

Maybe it is improving your kicks, strengthening your stances, becoming more comfortable sparring, or learning Korean terminology.

Maybe it is simply committing to getting to class consistently during a busy school year.

Whatever the goal is, fall gives us a chance to establish that routine.

The students who make the greatest progress aren’t necessarily the ones who learn everything immediately.

They’re usually the ones who simply keep showing up.

Finish Strong. Start Strong.

This week sits right between two seasons.

We’re finishing summer.

We’re beginning a new school year.

We’re preparing for testing.

And we’re getting ready for everything fall will bring.

So don’t coast through the transition.

Finish summer strong.

Come into Pre-Test Week ready to work.

Walk into Saturday’s testing prepared to give your best effort.

Walk into your classroom with confidence.

Then take whatever comes next one class, one technique, one assignment, and one challenge at a time.

Because whether you’re earning a new belt, starting a new grade, or working toward a goal that still seems far away, progress happens the same way:

Prepare. Show up. Do the work. Keep moving forward.

Good luck to everyone preparing for Summer Testing this Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing you leave everything you have on the floor.

Tang Soo!
