As we wrap up the Thanksgiving weekend and step into the fast-moving Christmas season, our word of the week is Awareness—a perfect theme as we spend this week training self-defense in class.
The holidays bring excitement, busier schedules, more travel, bigger crowds, and plenty of distractions. It’s easy to get swept up in the rush. But awareness is what keeps us grounded, safe, and present.
In Tang Soo Do, awareness goes far beyond seeing what’s in front of you. It’s a practice. A mindset. A skill we can sharpen every day.
Three Dimensions of Awareness
1. Awareness of our surroundings
This is the foundation of self-defense. When you’re aware of what’s happening around you, you make better decisions and avoid dangerous situations before they ever begin. We’ll be focusing on this all week—how to read your environment, trust your instincts, and move with purpose.
2. Awareness of others
During the holidays, emotions run high. People are stressed, tired, or overwhelmed. Being aware of others helps us respond with patience, respect, and kindness. Awareness keeps our interactions peaceful and reminds us that everyone is carrying their own burdens.
3. Awareness of ourselves
This is where martial arts shines. Awareness of our breathing, our posture, our emotions, and our intentions. When we slow down enough to be aware, we grow. We make better choices. We build confidence from the inside out.
Awareness is the bridge between gratitude and action. Thanksgiving invites us to notice what we’re grateful for. Awareness reminds us to protect it—to show up fully and intentionally, both in training and in life.
As we move into this week of self-defense training, let’s challenge ourselves to stay aware—in the dojang, at school, at work, and in every moment of this busy season.
