🌊 What Gets Inside Matters Most

🌊 What Gets Inside Matters Most

“An entire sea of water can’t sink a ship unless it gets inside the ship. Similarly, the negativity of the world can’t put you down unless you allow it to get inside you.”
— Goi Nasu

This quote hits deep—and it couldn’t be more relevant to both life and our training here at the dojang.

Every day, we’re surrounded by challenges. Stress from work, school pressures, negativity from others, self-doubt… it’s all out there. Just like the ocean around a ship, it’s constant. But here’s the truth: none of it has power over you unless you let it in.

That’s what martial arts teaches us at its core.

🥋 Training the Mind Through the Body

This week, we’re focusing on hand techniques, strong stances, and Ho Sin Sul (self-defense).

At first glance, these might seem like purely physical skills—but they’re much more than that.

  • Hand techniques teach precision, control, and intention
  • Stances build a strong foundation—physically and mentally
  • Ho Sin Sul teaches awareness, confidence, and how to respond under pressure

When we practice these, we’re not just learning how to block, strike, or defend…
We’re learning how to stay grounded when things get difficult.

A weak stance collapses under pressure.
A strong stance holds firm.

The same goes for your mindset.

🧠 The Real Battle

Negativity doesn’t knock—it seeps in quietly.

It shows up as:

  • “I’m not good enough.”
  • “I’ll never get this.”
  • “What’s the point?”

But just like we train to block a strike, we can train to block those thoughts.

We do that by:

  • Showing up consistently
  • Pushing through discomfort
  • Supporting each other as a community
  • Reminding ourselves why we started

Every time you step on the mat, you’re reinforcing something powerful:

You are in control of what gets inside.

❤️ A Note for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day here, we want to take a moment to recognize all the incredible moms in our community.

Whether you’re a mom, grandmother, guardian, or someone who steps into that role—your impact is immeasurable. The patience, strength, and love you show every day is something we deeply respect.

We had originally planned a Mother’s Day event, but with everything going on, we made the decision to hold off this year so we can do it the right way in the future.

That said, the appreciation doesn’t go anywhere.

From all of us at Owosso Martial Arts—
Thank you for everything you do.

💬 Final Thought

A ship doesn’t fear the ocean—it respects it.

In the same way, we don’t avoid challenges—we train for them.

Stay strong in your stance.
Stay sharp in your technique.
And most importantly…

Guard what you allow inside.
